Thursday 3 March 1994

Barbie Thomas rang earlier in the day and asked me to join her and Paul and a few friends tonight for celebrating autumn with the galleries at Salamanca.

We ate a pile of souffle things at DinDins, then trotted round the corner to Despard to meet the artist--Stephen Bond who is exhibiting some cute prints and drawings: 'From St Kilda to Salamanca'. The work was quite good, I think, from a technical point of view. But what struck me was that when I looked hard at them I thought I could smell things that were in the pictures.

I mean, is that weird? I'm sure dog turds, car exhaust and wet concrete smells aren't usually impregnated into artwork.

I whispered all this to Paul but he just switched on that bemused smile of his. Yum. Lucky Barbie.
