My new boss, Susan Tozer, invited me to her farm in the back blocks behind Campania. It's called Native Corners because it's at the intersection of the aboriginals' old tribal areas.

Andrew Phoebe, his wife Helen and a few other people were there. Lots of cabernet sauvignon, steak, fancy salads. Then we walked through the bush and found a big cave, sloping upwards under a cliff. Full of dirt and small bones--an inland midden.

Later we climbed to the top of the hill above which we found an ancient pine tree and ruined stone walls. Local lore says a century ago the owners built a series of hilltop refuges in case the Russians came. They could hide up there and pick off the enemy one by one.

No global policemen then!
