Roger McAlister walks into Ward 2D at the Royal Hobart Hospital. A sharp smell hangs in the air, like burnt linen.

'And how are we this morning, Mr Williams?'

'I've finally followed your advice, doctor.'

'Well, I'm pleased about that.'

'Yep. I've given up smoking.' Brian's face crinkles. He wheezes a bit. Two or three near-by patients laugh.

'But I notice no one read your blood pressure last night. That's not very good.'
